The Vitruvian Triad is a triptych, each echoing a phase in the life of the sea anemone, and each embodying one of Vitruvius’ timeless principles: utility, delight, and firmness.

  • Infant - Utility (Utilitas): A small pipe, functional and direct. It symbolizes survival stripped to its essence, the way the youngest anemone clings to rock and tide.

  • Juvenile - Delight (Venustas): Dynamic, playful, growing into itself. This stage embodies beauty and appeal, the joy of becoming, the aesthetic pleasure of form unfurling in water.

  • Mature - Firmness (Firmitas): The largest, vibrant, and confident. It represents strength, resilience, and the ability to withstand the forces of nature and time, a living testament sculpted by current and storm.

The series is inspired by what I witnessed on the sea floor while working as an emergency response hazardous waste scuba diver for the EPA, one of only fifty in the nation certified to swim in toxic waters in the name of public health and the environment. In that abyss, even amid contamination, I saw life: fragile yet eternal, delicate yet unyielding.
