Strange Humors

Portland, Maine & Portland, Oregon

2025-2026

Strange Humors is a full‑scale, functional, and playable ceramic replica of my 1964 Conn 8D French horn, the Elkhart golden‑era instrument prized for its nickel‑silver build and dark, milky tone. Alongside it sit two replica Denis Wick stop mutes, also rendered in clay, both functional.

The horn is gloriously out of tune, a deliberate imperfection that mirrors the off‑beat humor of John Mackey’s composition. Strange Humors is my homage to the horn I played at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and to the piece which taught me that music, like clay, thrives in tension: between precision and chaos, between beauty and humor.
