Benediction of Nature
Portland, Oregon
2026
Benediction of Nature rises from a confluence of traditions: a gardener’s quiet wisdom at the Portland Japanese Garden, the disciplined stillness of tokonoma alcoves, and the centuries‑old sculptural language of penjing. At its center sits a golden barrel cactus in full, impossible bloom, a sun‑forged creature of the desert placed within a Zen garden’s raked geometry.
The contrast is intentional: austerity meeting abundance, silence meeting radiance. Light pulses from within the cactus like a heartbeat, turning each rib into a glowing spine and each flower into a lantern. The bloom becomes a crown, a halo, a soft eruption of color against the disciplined sand lines that frame it.
The piece is an offering, a benediction, a moment where nature, craft, and ritual meet in a single breath.
